This is a neat video! I haven’t been to Benihana since sometime in the early 1990s, because they just don’t exist in this part of the country, but recently I was reminded of their existence by the AMC 1960s period drama Mad Men, in which Benihana is apparently the restaurant experience of choice for entertaining Japanese business men.

A few days ago I was alerted to a great video that Benihana put out, a commercial, that takes a look at both the current, modern incarnation as well as looking back at their beginnings in 1964 as a glamorous, sexy and exotic place. Take a look!

Do we think we’re clever, sneaky lunchboxes? Do you think I don’t see what you’re doing? Do you think I don’t know BENTO when I see it??

If you’ve at all followed any of my blogs you know that I’m in love with all things obento. I have a bento collection to rival that of the entire country of Japan – Hello Kitty, Rilakkuma, Monokuro Boo, and so on. I love the taste of the foods, the care that goes into preparation, the culture that surrounds bento and the nice feeling you get when you carefully prepare bento for a loved one.

I’ve been hoping, praying, that those briefcase-like laptop lunches would some day be rivaled by a Western version of the bento box and here it is! Feast your eyes on LunchBots Duo Stainless Steel Snack Container! She’s 18/8 stainless steel and not plastic (plastics contain chemicals that can get into your food), and I don’t yet have a plastic-free container – you can’t get them here. Come to me, precious…

Isn’t she lovely? Isn’t she wonderful? I really hope I’m able to participate in this campaign!

Here’s something I haven’t had in a long, long time that I’d love to get my hands on for pot stickers – goat meat! In fact, I’ve only ever had it once or twice but it was fabulous!

Goat Leg MeatI’m actually reading the recipes on this website, all of which seem a bit on the complicated side (like Jerked Leg of Goat) and wondering if it’s something I could do? Some of the ingredients include ginger and dark brown sugar, it just sounds sweet, tangy and delicious. I’d love to try my hand at this, I wonder if it would be too hard to dress up goat meat for use in a bento box? I said pot stickers earlier, but this jerked leg of goat actually sounds like it would be great with rice if you cut it up into small pieces and filled out an empty niche in your bento box with it.

It would definitely be unique, plus goat is so good for you compared to other meats and is actually very low fat. The problem remains, as always, where do you buy goat meat? You can’t get it out here, though. I live in the middle of hog country and you’re lucky if you can get chicken or beef at a decent price, so until now I thought goat meat was out of the question because it was hard to come by out here. But the website I’m surfing right now, the one I’ve been talking about with all of these amazing goat recipes? It’s for a company called Gedalias that actually sells farm raised goat meat over the internet. It’s not expensive, they have a lot of different cuts including ground if you want to make burgers. It’s such a great idea! It would be a great gift for anyone you know who loves to cook and loves to try new things. If you’ve ordered from them, I’d love to hear about your experiences!

I had such a good day and am in the best mood. I’ve gotten almost all of my work done, the doggy’s been out multiple times which means I got a nice walk away from my computer. I’m drinking iced tea right this minute. Life is sweet.

Granted, this is only a momentary lapse in horrible. It was brought on by my mother being out of my life for a day and taking her hubby with her, which means I’m free to clean, work and so forth without hearing my name hollered from downstairs eighty times a day, lol! She’s still angry with me because I didn’t make a big deal when she asked what we would be doing for Thanksgiving dinner. Honestly, I’m not a big Thanksgiving fan – for the most part I just love the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and try to watch every year, which she doesn’t like because it cuts into my cooking-for-mom time.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, I do actually need to start preparing for that. I know I do, but I’ve been procrastinating! My big issue is that mom and hubby like things just so – fatty, salty and generally not very tasty. They put butter in rice…. in rice! And not just any rice, but my beautiful short grain sushi rice. I love that rice, my gorgeous Wolfgang Puck 5 cup does an amazing job on it, I think it’s my all time favorite piece of cookware and I don’t know what I’d do without it. So I spend a small fortune importing this rice, I wash it several times, soak it for 20 minutes then cook it until it’s just right and what do they do? Put butter on it! I swear they’d put gravy on it if I turned my back for two seconds, lol!

Speaking of rice, maybe a wild rice and mushroom stuffing would be a treat? I don’t know if they’d like it, though, but I think Imouto chan will be happy with it. Now, how can keep my mother from literally stuffing it into the turkey?

I don’t know if you’ve heard about Trusted Tours and Attractions before, but they’ve got discounted tickets to sight seeing tours in some awesome destinations. I’ve never really thought about sightseeing tours, I mean I knew about them – I knew they existed – but every vacation I’ve ever taken was just a trip to relax and let the world roll by, but you don’t really get to fully experience a location that way. I’d love to go to Key West, or back to San Diego, where my step sister used to live. We used to go up every couple of years and stay with her, and we’d go to Sea World, the San Diego Zoo and drive all the way up to Anaheim and visit Disneyland and Knott’s, which were, and still remain to this day, my favorite vacation activities.

One of the more fun memories of visiting San Diego was going to the Zoo when I was 12. My parents kept a pretty tight leash on us, they were very strict and, to be honest, didn’t like Laota and I to really enjoy anything we were doing – almost like we were committing a sin by having fun. We weren’t allowed to make noise, or laugh too loud or too much, and heaven help you if you were hurt or cried at all. So most of our vacations were spent with everyone sitting quietly in a relatives living room. But this particular year we were both with our step sister (who’s 20 years older than us) and not our parents, and we ran around like lunatics, all three of us. We bought souvenirs, which we later got in trouble for, and took pictures of the animals, especially the birds. We even bought San Diego Zoo visors, and for Laota and I that was us wasting money but we didn’t care, it was just nice to be allowed to have fun for once.

I’d love to go back, were I ever to get up the cash to do so. Trusted Tours and Attractions offer of Old Town Trolley tours sounds like just what I need, I get to see the sights and I don’t have to hobble around the streets looking for sights with my not-too-keen eyes, lol. Actually, Trusted Tours has an e-Newsletter and, if you sign up by December 14, 2007, you’re automatically entered to win yourself 4 free tickets to the city you choose, isn’t that awesome?

I think a lot about where I’d go if I had vacation time and money, and the will to go considering I’ve been exhausted for so long, I always think of somewhere sunny with water and sand, and I never thought for a second about using Holiday Rental to find a ski apartment in Bansko for your ski holiday. Apparently, these destinations are in Bulgaria – for real! I never heard of anyone going to Bulgaria for a ski holiday, but I suppose people who live in luxury can do those kinds of things. Apparently Holiday Rentals has the best accommodation and cabin selection in the UK, they even have villas and chalets to choose from and they have what they call the Rent With Confidence Guarantee that you can read about HERE. What a cool idea, not one I’d ever have thought of, I hope to take them up on it one day. :D

Well, I’ve just joined up over at Blogvertise, which is a blogger-driven marketing service in which bloggers, like moi, get the opportunity to review products and services from advertisers and give our honest opinions about them on our personal blogs.

I’m excited about this, because a lot of pay-to-blog services require only one hundred percent positive posting which is why I refused to join many said websites that I’d been to, simply because I’m not going to lie to my visitors – and Blogvertise doesn’t want me to, either. They’re website claims that I, the blogger, may post whatever I want to post about the product, service, ect. that I’m asked to post about, which means if it’s something I’m ethically against I can say that, if I love it I can say that to, if I think it’s dangerous, if I don’t like the color, if it seems impractical or even too practical – I can say whatever I think and still make money for my opinion. How can you beat that? Not even with a stick, that’s how, lol.

Of course, I am given a time limit in which to complete these opportunities, so I do have some restrictions but I’m not all that worried about that – I’ve got a lot of sheer determination, and that’s easily the best spice for someone starting out in a venture like this. Wish me luck!

Ohh, this is neat – I’m checking out envelope printing from Envelope Printing Online. They’ve got a decent selection, a bit on the small side for an online printer, and the prices are pretty good for anyone who – like me – doesn’t live anywhere near a Kinkos but could still use a service like this. Overall it’s a nifty site, my only complaint is that their selection is very corporate, and I don’t blame them at all for that. I’m sure corporations are their number one customer, but they do run a business online and if they’re going to compete they’re going to have to branch out into more fun, artsy and even cute designs to keep up with the big boys like Vista Print. It’s a nice site, though, and they’re definately worth checking out. I may refer my boss there, the designs look like they’re right up his alley. :D

You know, I never thought I’d be looking at apartments in Austin Texas, or anywhere in Texas, for that matter. In fact, I believe at some point I swore Texas off as a possible place to move to once I get out of Stabsourri, but I’m looking at some of these places on SimpleSearchApartments.com and they actually don’t look half bad, a bit on the pricey side but not too bad. The search engine thingie is awesome, like Rent.com without all the annoying ads and pop-ups, and you get more advanced choices for search criteria, like searching by amenities or school district, or even by pets – very nifty site.

Ooh, nifty… Design Diva’s got some gorgeous fabric, just beautiful stuff, some of which is hand painted Egyptian cotton with asian prints, a few of the tropical ones, of course, caught my eye and they’ve got discount Scalamandre fabric that’s just to die for. One of the things I noticed immediately was that they had brocade – brocade! That’s like the sound of Angels singing to a former Goth, well, once and future Goth, lol. I love rich fabrics and colors, and the amazing array of gem tones means I have to figure out how to hold an online store up at gun point – or just make more money so I can buy my lovelies, lol.

Here’s something I didn’t know, and knowing me it was most likely common knowledge, but back to my ignorance. I just found out that the holiday trees in Washington D.C. and Rockefeller Center in New York City are lit up with LED Christmas lights from Holiday LEDs which, as you may also already know, are eco friendly ( use 90% less energy than regular christmas lights ). I’ve been wanting some of these LED holiday lights for awhile now, they taunt me because they know I can’t afford them, lol. I love this kind of thing, though, because in my fondest dreams I’m some kind of decorating superhero who’s yard and trees always look professional and everything’s perfectly safe and in tip top shape, all well oiled and choreographed to music like a Las Vegas fountain, lol. Alas, I’m not – I actually royally suck, but I still want these delicious lights. They’re the only LED Christmas lighting of their kind.

See, other LED holiday lighting that’s made especially for the pros isn’t UL approved for an astonishing feat that Holiday LEDs is approved for, and that feat is that, end-to-end, you can connect these bad boys and stretch lights for over a half a mile – oh yes, an entire half a mile – and to add to their safety, they have hard plastic encasement ( is encasement even a word? ) and never get too far above room temperature so you don’t have to worry about moisture getting into them and ruining your lights, or them heating up and burning down your house. The only problem with me getting a string is that I’m ungodly poor and I’d have to steal them, which isn’t out of the question yet but I’d like to wait until I have magical powers.

The Mist

Nov. 6th, 2007 05:48 am
bento_box: KFC Christmas (KFC Christmas)

Has anyone heard of The Mist by Stephen King? Apparently it’s a newbie in the thriller movie market, though I don’t know how long it’s been around as a book – forever, I know that, lol. I’d heard about the book when I was a kid ( I think? ) so I’d say it’s at least 1981 or before. It’s one of the many Stephen King novels I’ve never read, the reason being that I think Stephen lost his marbles after Carrie, lol.

Don’t get me wrong, I love some of his works – Sometimes They Come Back, in particular – but Carrie was always the crowning achievement in my eyes ( possibly tied with The Stand ). I’ve even thoroughly loved the many film adaptions of his books, and this one, I’m sure, will be no exception.

Carrie, though, was so novel at the time, it wasn’t like any book I’d ever read before, and to punctuate how important it was to the horror novel, how many ‘teenage girl finds out she has magic/psychic powers and breaks out of her shell’ books or films have come along since? Yes, he started a booming, thriving business with that – a whole sub genre to itself.

The Mist is about this town ( I think it’s just a town ) that’s plaqued by an unnatural mist after a thunderstorm, and anyone who goes out into said mist is attacked by monsters – eek! I think they’re putting this out at the wrong time, lol, it’s got Halloweenie written all over it. If you haven’t checked the trailer out, you seriously should if you’re a King fan.

I’m about to say something odd, so please stay with me for a moment. Not all of my teeth are sensitive. In fact, I’m not sure if I qualify as having sensitive teeth because I only have a few that are, in fact if cold water touches them I can turn my own brain power into lightening and shoot it out of my fingertips. But most of my teeth are fine, but I use two toothpaste’s anyway. I use a sensitive toothpaste ( Sensodyne ) when I can afford it, which is rarely, and a green tea mint toothpaste for everyday, and Sensodyne really does work – to a point.

A few years back, before I started my occasional romance with Sensodyne, one tooth in particular was so sensitive that I couldn’t even chew on that side of my mouth, because if what I was eating was too hot it about killed me, too cold and it was worse. I wish I’d known then about Biotene Sensitive, a new product that claims to contain the number one sensitivity ingredient and number one dry mouth protection. When I say new, I really mean it’s new to me, apparently Biotene has been available, at least to the Dental and Medical professions for at least twenty years, since that’s how long they’ve been recommending it.

The company sent me a sample to try ( bigger than even a travel sized toothpaste, way bigger than I expected it to be ), and I can’t stop singing it’s praises.

Biotene Sensitive

I sampled Biotene today, and I have to admit I was impressed. You get the same feeling from Biotene – for those of you who use Sensodyne, I’m sure you know what I mean by that – that you get when you use Sensodyne, but Biotene isn’t just a sensitivity or dry mouth toothpaste like the others I’ve tried, it also helps to prevent canker sores, defends against bacteria, plaque and gingivitis and has Xylitol which prevents cavities. Has a toothpaste taste, too, and yes I know it’s weird saying that about a toothpaste, but I want you to use a sensitivity toothpaste and tell me what it tastes like, lol. I’ll comment later on, after a few days, on how well the sensitivity is going – so far it’s great but most sensitivity toothpastes I’ve tried take a few days to really show it’s colors, I hope it’s as good in the long run as it is right now. If it keeps this up, it gets the Faith Everyman Seal of Approval, lol.

Do you know what sucks? Missouri sucks. Our house needs some serious landscaping, because we’re at the lowest point in the city and, no matter what we do, it gets washed away when the creek ( about half a block directly behind our house ) floods and fills the whole yard like a swimming pool. Seriously, I’ve got pictures on this blog of it flooding like that. And it screws up whatever we’ve done, the only thing that survives are the older hedges but leaves, sticks and sometimes small drowned animals get stuck in them and the longer branches take forever to get out, but everything else – everything we’ve planted, any new brickwork, our landscape lighting, our decorations, ect. is washed away or ruined. It even ruined our miniature fountain we had on the side of our house, which I just found out. PEW.

So, the girlie in me has decided I need new shoes. Oh yes, new, new shoes. Beautiful Dansko shoes. I find myself adoring Dansko shoes, especially the beautimous Courtney in black oiled, which is so me, so very me. It screams to the New York boho in me that I left behind in my teens to persue my insane love of all things Japanese, but for $114 I’m willing to make an exception and go a little boho again, for old times sake. :P

Dansko has such gorgeous style and my $114 shoes would be enough to qualify me for their free shipping! Yes, shipping’s free on orders over $100 and why didn’t I notice those Courtney’s come in white? *sigh* Dankso, you’re evil! You want me to spend all my money at your site! >_<

I’m assuming you’ve read my ranting about how I can’t get my skin to ‘get right’. I’m not too worried about my face since, so long as I remember never to actually touch it with my hands ( lol ), almost never break out. But my PCOS keeps my skin guessing, especially on my neck, I can be clear-skinned for weeks then I’ll get attacked by zitties that I can’t shake no matter what I do, and where I live you either pay very high prices for things via the mail or you just do without treatments which is why I’ve been contemplating Proactiv, even if they do have Jessica Simpson in their ads, lol.

See, the fact that it was developed by dermatologists is what I’m really looking for, because I don’t have the ability to visit a doctor, let alone a dermatologist. Proactive also claims to be able to stop new blemishes before they start, which is what really makes the system seem sparkly to me and worth the money, because it’s the fear of them forming that’s my real problem. Woe is zitty me, lol.

I’m sure you’ve noticed sites that ask for ridicule like Match.com, who have unreasonable prices and promise, at best, the same results you could get at a bar for the price of a drink, and more ridiculously the horrible eHarmony, who have twice rejected friends of mine on the grounds of their sexual preference ( can you believe that crap? ) and yet still charge insane prices. I mean, I’m with you eHarmony – if you want to screen people to make sure you can match them with each other, I get that. And if you want to keep out the loonies? I get that, too, but since when is being gay or bisexual considered looney? I bet you I misspelled looney, lol.

Well, fret no more, my dears for Faith brings you major linkage of the free kind, and yes I do realize that made no sense but bare with me. For everyone who’s looking for that special someone but doesn’t want to file for bankruptcy to do it should check out Flirtbox. Flirtbox is a usa dating site, yes another one, but it’s one you’ll appreciate the link to. This particular dating site has an active forum and state/region specific profiles, and on top of all that it’s 100% free, oh yes, my pretties. I did say free. The design of the site loads really fast, it’s easy to find your way around, the support/forum staff seems friendly and did I mention it’s free?

Why would you bother paying to be matched up with some pathetic, one-dimensional joke just because eHarmony can afford to put a commercial on the air with a clone of that creepy old Orvil Popcornbutter guy? Do you realize that eHarmony and Match.com can afford those commercials because they charge the life out of their members? And I poked around Flirtbox’s forum, FAQ, support, ect – it’s a neat place, I really recommend taking it for a test drive. What could it hurt – nothing to pay means nothing to lose, right? Try it out, you might be pleasently surprised. ;)

Okay, I’m not usually swayed by designer handbags, mostly because I tend to think designers charge entirely too much for their products, but Bolzano has some beautiful stuff at their site. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but since when is designer anything going to come cheap enough to sell at Small Mart? I’m especially attatched to the City Stitch Gianina tote, in it’s gorgeous white and green, with such clean lines and beautiful tropical colors. I hate not having a billion dollars, because I need a billion of those, or whatever a billion divided by two hundred is. I’ve confused myself, lol.

I just adore some of this stuff, it’s one of those things I can trick myself into saving up for, lol. Generally, my bags cost about one dollar and I have to mend them somehow. I keep thinking, what would I do with a designer handbag, though? I never go anywhere, but I buy jewelry and make up that I never wear, so I don’t see how this is any different, lol.

Ahhh, SelectBlinds.com is neat! Besides just being the one stop window coverings shop for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and even to spite that fact, they have some really beautiful blinds. They boast window shades, mini blinds, faux and real wood blinds as well as my favorite item on the website, the absolutely stunning Tropical Isle Bamboo shades in Manaca Cocoa, a beautifully rich cocoa color that would look fabulous with the dark sage green in my bedroom. The best part, though, is that if you aren’t sure how your new blinds will look, you can order a sample for free – including free shipping – to find your perfect match.

I’ve found out very recently that real estate in Missouri is climbing in price again, at least here in the Northwest. When we moved out here, our neighbors had bought their house for only $50,000-ish and they ran it into the ground for ten years, then turned around and sold it – looking rundown with bad wiring and plumbing – for almost $160,000. This I know because our neighbors are those Keeping Up With The Jones types who brag about every damn thing they do. And I bought into it, and thought it was pricey until I found out what homes are going for in other parts. Scottsdale realtors, alone, are selling up to $3,995,000 and my step sister and her husband sold their Oceanside ranch-style ( yes, a tiny ranch ) for 630,000 – can you believe that? And I keep hearing that real estate will be rising even more, so I guess if you’re gonna buy, you better get cracking, lol.
